Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is a painful condition that occurs when tendons in your elbow are overused, usually by continual, repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. According to Tennis elbow is a type of tendinitis -- swelling of the tendons -- that causes pain in the elbow and arm. There is a similar type of injury that happens with golfers. These tendons are bands of tissue that connect the muscles of your lower arm to the bone. Tennis elbow is the most common reason that people see their doctors for elbow pain. The tendon usually involved in tennis elbow is called the Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis (ECRB). These repetitive strain injuries are actually caused by overuse of the wrist despite the pain being felt in the elbow.

Occupational Elbow Injuries

Athletes, enthusiasts and weekend warriors aren't the only people who develop tennis elbow. People whose professions include the types of motions that can lead to tennis elbow include plumbers, painters, carpenters and butchers.

The Chronic Pain of Tennis Elbow

The pain of tennis elbow occurs primarily where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to a bony bump on the outside of your elbow. Pain can also spread into your forearm and wrist and make it difficult to do everyday activities like twist the cap on a water bottle, use a can opener, type on a keyboard or open a wine bottle.

Traditional Western Remedies for Tendinitis

Physicians often recommend icing the elbow to reduce pain and swelling and using an elbow strap to protect the injured tendon from further strain.

Additionally doctors will recommend, rest (time off from playing tennis) and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin, to help with pain and swelling. If the pain is severe they may recommend cortisone injections.

According to MayoClinic, if conservative treatments don't help or if symptoms are disabling, your doctor might suggest surgery.

Natural Remedies for Tennis Elbow

Dr. Axe has written a comprehensive article on natural treatments for tennis elbow. He also recommends resting, icing, stretching and exercising the area as the best ways to start the healing process. You can read the entire article here.

There are also natural remedies that can help alleviate tennis or golfer’s elbow and the stiffness, swelling, joint pain and trouble you have moving your arm normally. Dr. Axe describes a series of simple exercises using the Egoscue Method of realigning the body to help tennis and golfers elbow here.

Most agree one should try to eliminate the inflammation first. This aggressive treatment below is from an avid tennis player Anuj Varma

  • a) Aggressive icing

  • b) DMSO with Aloe Vera Gel – Very strong and effective, though with a nasty side effect (itchiness). Aloe Vera combined DSMO is slightly better. Alternate with vitamin E oil over the skin to mitigate the ‘itchiness’ side effect. DMSO is used topically to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, and muscle and skeletal injuries. DMSO is also used topically to treat painfulconditions such as headache, inflammation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe facial pain called tic douloureux.

  • c) Cod Liver Oil (fresh, not capsules) and MSM powder – These were the only ‘supplements’ that showed instant results.

  • d) Electrotherapy and Ultrasound  –  Ultrasound is great for DEEP inflammation, Electro for more outer, broader scoped inflammation. For Electrotherapy, I recommend getting a HOME TENS unit. This is very effective – and you can effectively WORK with this UNIT ON.

Controlling the Pain of Tennis Elbow Naturally

One way to control the pain naturally is to use our transdermal magnesium oilin combination with a few drops of cypress essential oil which will help improve circulation. Helichrysum oil helps repair damaged nerve tissue. Peppermint essential oil can also reduce pain, while frankincense  increases healing by decreasing inflammation. To use essential oils, mix several drops of one of the oils above with a our pure Magnesium Oil and apply the mixture to painful areas topically 3 times daily.

According to Dr. Sircus, magnesium deficiencies feed the fires of inflammation and pain. Inflammation of all types is the activation of the immune system in response to infection, irritation, or injury. Characterized by an influx of white blood cells, redness, heat, swelling, pain, and dysfunction of the organs involved, inflammation has different names when it appears in different parts of the body. Most allergy and asthma sufferers are familiar with rhinitis (inflammation of the nose), sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses), and asthma (inflammation of the airways), but inflammation is also behind arthritis (inflammation of the joints), dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), and so on.

Magnesium is extremely important for helping our bodies function at the optimimal level. Magnesium is used in 300+ biological transactions in the human body. It is  vital for us because it is required for nerve impulse transmission and turning off the contraction of muscle fiber.

Of course you should make every attempt to consume Magnesium rich foods including dark green leafy vegetables, seaweed, hard water sources of drinking water and nuts like cashews.

There are many magnesium benefits, the relationship with the tendonitis dynamic is one of them.
